Hello all just throwing out a question about a 96 explorer 4.0L AWD.

When I took it to the drive clean to get the emmissions checked it failed NOX by a little over twice allowable.
CO was 0.00 and HC was 5 <- those two are well within limits.

Things we've checked

Egr seems to be ok.

Egr selinoed questionable

Cats questionable

Disconnected computer and did a relearn

Replaced all O2 sensors as ford recommends after 100,000.

Just wondering if someone could throw a suggestion on some obscure items before I fork out the bucks for cats.
and an egr and find out that those won't do it for me.

information :

110,000 km (58,000 miles about)
stop and go driving for most of the time.
mostly short trips so might be a touch of old lady syndrome.

And something that's been suggested to me is running 2 litres of nappfa (or however its spelled) camping fuel in the gas tank to clean out the cats, Any first hand information on melting o2 sensors or anything like that?
Thanks

ps and any information anyone could give me on that carbon cleaning solution that I saw all over the ford explorer sites about hooking a bottle of water up to a vaccuum port it would be appreciated.

Who ever smogged it is supposed to tell you what is wrong if it does not pass. I would go to them and ask.
