Hey ppl. I just recently came into posession of a 96 Explorer Sport. It has a 4.0 and is 4wd and I am trying to work some bugs out of it. I replaced all of the spark plugs with Autolite Platinums and it had a check engine light on. Bank 2 oxygen sensor, so I purchased one of those and replaced it too. Took the neg. terminal off a few minutes and the check engine light went off.It has used almost 1/2 tank of gas on 72 miles, but I haven't gotten to drive it much since the Oxygen sensor was changed. It was idling very eratically before and it still is, although not near as bad now and I have much better throttle response now too. It still seems slow to me for a response though, but I am assuming maybe its just where its a new vehicle to me that i am unfamiliar with. The plug wires are in good shape and I am uncertain as to wht is causing this. It goes from around a 900RPM normal idle for it up to around 1,200 and then down to almost 600 ... not always, just sometimes ... most times it stays between 900-1,000 and has a little roughness to the engine when sitting still. Also one more ? the spark plugs I took out only had threads about 1/3 the length of the part that screws in the cylinder and the rest was smooth and the new ones were threaded all the way down. The new ones seemed to tighten up and seat good, but I want to make sure this is ok. Thanks in advance for your time ... RSM

which motor ohv, or sohc? i would think you have a bad fuel pressure regulator, or a bad intake gasket.

not sure

I don't know exactly which motor ... but I just filled it up and it took 8.338 gallons to go 75 miles ... thats less than 10 mpg ... NOT GOOD !! and it doesn't seem like it has any power either ... I mean it runs ok, but it doesn't have much get up and go at all. I don't think its the head gasket leaking because it doesn't leak any antifreeze.
