Hey Guys,
I'm glad 2 b part of the forum.

Every since I bought my explorer about 3 years ago, it has been giving 2 major problems:-
1. There is a loud constant humming sound that happens everyday when Im either driving at low speeds or idling, once I speed up it stops.

2. My code reader keeps giving me code P0455 (evaporative emission system leak-gross)

Has anyone encountered these probs b4, that might be able to help me to solve these problems.

Thanks

The humming noise I can say with confidence, it going to be a front hub assembly, those darn things are unbelievable, I have seen them be the culprits of so many problems, as for the evaporative emission system leak-gross, that sounds like The vapor canister, or charcoal canister that absorbs the evaporating gas fumes from the gas tank and other places, has a self check feature that will pressurize the system slightly, and measure for leaks.
A hose missing or cracked in that system will allow it to leak during that test, and store a code.
Another thing that will cause that leak and code, is a leaking gas cap. My 97 has that code pop all the time and makes the check engine light come on, I got out and checked the gas cap and it was still there so I just keep driving it. One day I am going to change the gas cap

Hope that helps, Jack

counter to what the previous poster indicated, it isn't your bearings especially since you indicate that its there during idle (ie. not moving). Its your IAC... it makes the famous "moose call". There are lots of posts on this including audio clips. You can either try clean it or replace it.

Oh yea, duh, I just noticed he said at idle, don't they make that noise sometimes for about 10 seconds or so after the truck is off too, I had a Cadillac that did that to me.

hi sir,
I believe u have hit the nail on the head, it just so happens that I had one, changed it and the code is gone, I will still have to monitor the humming sound, but I certainly let u know.
Thanks a million

I don't believe that the IAC change will have any impact on your "code". I don't think that the IAC throws a code in most cases. As indicated, the area around "evaporative emissions" is usually related to gas tank stuff and most likely a worn cap or possibly not tighten / misthreaded cap. Hopefully, your "moose call" is gone.... been there done that ...:-)
