I'm pretty sure that the gear on all of these Explorer and Rangers are all plastic, real easy to remove the single bolt that holds the VSS into the tranny or transfer-case (depending on year and model. You might have to rock the VSS a little as you pull it out, there's an o-ring sealing it to keep dust out and the oil in and they will swell as they get old making them tougher to pull out. It's a good idea to replace that o-ring when you put it back together. I'm not positive but the O/D light flashing might be from the VSS as well as causing the speedo not working right.

thanks i will have a look at it cause i was thinking i would pull the trany out and rebuild it ...that and its not shifting right so i have the new filter and oil and a bottle lucas trans fix to put in.

The VSS can also cause shifting issues. I had that happen to a Ford Windstar I used to have. It would eventually go into limp-home mode and it would have really hard shifting and the shift point were WAY off, especially 1-2 and 2-3 and wouldn't go into O/D at all.

thats what seems to be happening now. and the fact my universal still need to be changed but it has power in low gears

Keep us updated on what you find

i got under the truck and i found that the grey wire the go's to the speed senser was rubing on the front drive shaft and now its shorting out so i think that my problem but will update after i fix and see what happens

yep that was the problem but still making a noise i think its unaversals i hope it not the transfer case cuz i did smell gear oil burning
