Okay, so I am looking to order replacements for my 1996 4.0 XLT and I wanted to know why some sites say two o2 sensors are on my truck and others say there are three?

Any helps where they are so I can look for myself and how to tell how many I would need?

there are 3..one after the cat, and one on each of the down pipes before the y comes togetehr...

Rock on, and thanks for the quick response.

Now if you would, are all the o2's the same as in I can go on ebay and order 3 of the same if they fit a 4.0 96 or is there a difference?

If there IS a difference, is there a model or part number that I should be looking for to be compattable with if it is a non ford product?

Thanks again all.

The O2 sensors are the same for all three, you can get some at auto zone for $54 a piece the 2 before the cat are more essential to engine ops the one after the cat is more emissions controls... the sensor farthest on the passengers side (bank 2 cylinders) is easiest to get at by removing the wheel splash guards behind pass tire and reaching through pretty easy to do and it really helps performance just dont force the connectors off to hard or you could break the snaps that hod the new connector.

The O2 sensors are the same for all three,

So what your saying is that I could go on ebay, buy three o2's for a 96 4.0 and they will all fit?

My only concern was in some of the photo's they look slightly different from one another. This could be the typical ebay one pic as jus an example only.

I have a 96 4.0 and they are all the same so it will work

Okay, I'm bumping this back up to the top because I just got done changing the right side O2 sensor and the check engine came back on. I checked it after I got done, reset with the engine analizer and everything was good for the first 10 miles. Then it came back. Ran the analizer again and the the P0141 code popped up AGAIN. Now, in the Chilton's book it says 95 to 99 explorers have 4 heated O2 sensors? But dman726749, you're saying only 3? My rig is a 96 XLT.

I'm thinking some electrical tape and I don't have to look at the light anymore. Not really.

dlo and smdavis - what was the outcome of your O2 problems? My 96XLT is throwing 2 different codes concerning the O2s and theres a horrible gas smell coming out of the exhaust and (of course) I'm getting terrible gas mileage. Did replacing them fix your problem? Can you give me name of the place you bought them and the part numbers? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
