It's time to change my brakes...the pedal seems to be very close to the floor and the breaking ability is next to none. I believe i have discs all the way around, but i could be wrong. Some rotors were replaced about 5000 miles ago. I probably only need the pads. Is there a good FAQ on changing the pads? I've never done a brake job before and some friends have told me horror stories on their cars. What tools will i need? What about the brake pedal...will it automatically reset itself?

Hey man, welomce to the wonderful world of brakes. There are numerous topics about this subject, try searching for "brakes." Also, it would probably be a good investment to buy a haynes repair manual. This will tell you step by step how to change pads w/pictures. You can buy one at pepboys or something.... also, try checking ebay, they are much cheaper there. This book is like your explorers bible. It will help with any other problems you may encounter. FYI- I got all new pads last week and them installed for $251 bucks at the dealer. Good luck man!!

Brakes are super simple to do on your X. But do get a manual. I think the pads are about $25 for each set. So for $50 you can do it yourself in an hour or two.

Explorer disc brakes are much easier to change than a lot of your buddies import brakes. :D

haha...i have a Haynes, Chiltons, and a Clymer manual...just wanted to see if there's any tricks or anything the manuals left out.

Make sure to pull out the caliper slide pins and relube them with a silicone brake grease. SilGlyde works well.
