I've bought my 97 Explorer XL this past Thursday and there's an issue with it that I'd like to fix ASAP...
It seems to constantly backfire. It's absolutely unnoticeable from the inside, but on the outside you can hear little pops around the cat (and much subtler little puffs from the exhaust tip), every few seconds (irregularily). The idle is a little bit rough, but doesn't seem to have any consistent high-low pattern to it.
The Check Engine light is on, but I don't have a scanner yet. I'll take it to Canadian Tire tomorrow morning, hopefully they offer diagnostics on Sunday...
Now here's the bummer... I found that the EGR is missing. There's the DPFE hanging there, two thick hoses dangling loose underneath, but no EGR valve. The socket where it's supposed to go is plugged by some red gunk and a bolt. It seems it's been like this for a long time now.

But the truck runs great! While it's not at all exciting in terms of power, I'm assuming it's just the way the basic pushrod V6 is supposed to be. Feels like it's got good torque at least. Overall, feels like a good modern bus.
It sounds smooth and even (very, very pleasant, actually) when driving along or accelerating, but I'm guessing the backfire is probably still there. It's certainly there when I'm not rolling, lean outside to hear better, and rev throughout the range. Regardless of the RPM, it puffs just the same.
Any ideas how to get rid of the backfire?
