My 1997 Explorer w/120,000 miles recently developed a "clunking" noise only while going downhill with my foot off of the gas. I noticed that it only comes on when there is backpressure on the driveline, as soon as you give it gas the noise goes out. You can feel the "clunking" in the floorboards right by your feet. If I watch the front wheels when it occures, you can see them shudder like something is binding when the noise comes in. My first thought was that the 4x4 was being engaged inadvertently by the computer, so I disconnected the wiring harness going to the T-case and test drove. The problem did not go away. Since the 97 Ex does not have locking hubs, how is the front axle and hubs engaged now? The 4X4 and T-case work perfectly otherwise. I can't seem to figure out what is generating this clunk. Thanks for you help in advance - Joel
