97 Explorer transmission.

Hi all, hope your well. I got my first explorer about 6 weeks ago and now its sat on the drive, with no gears! I had been on a 90 mile trip, stopped for about an hour, then started to head home after about 20 minutes I stopped at a roundabout and it stalled. Clicked into neutral to restart then back into drive and just rolled backwards. No prewarning noises, and no noises when it happened. No drive in any gear, 2 or 4 wd and the low 4x4 light doesn't come on when I flick the switch round. Also makes a grinding noise when trying to select park now for a few seconds and then goes in? And ideas would be a great help, look forward to hearing back, thanks daniel

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the UK Explorer owners section. Did you check the fluid level?

sounds similar to a fault i had on mine, being the transfer box has a fault. the fact that you don't get the overdrive light flashing (indicating a fault on the autobox) and that 4X4low won't select could also point to this.

I take it you have tried cycling the 4x4 selector a few times?

Once you have a replacement transfer box it is not difficult to change it yourself
