on my 1998 Explorer when I put it in low range via the electric shift on the dash it will not come out when I go back to 2 wheel drive. I used to could hear it shift into low range and back out at one time, but when I shift it now I can not hear it, but I it is in low range because of the hum when moving and it pops if i turn sharp. I can take the battery loose and reset it and will be fine, but when I shift back, it will not come out, the indicator on the dash will still show low 4x4 until I pull the battery cable. Any suggestions,, thanks

are you putting the truck in neutral while shifting in and out of 4Lo?

a friend purchased a 2000 part time 4wd explorer and forgot to put the truck in N when shifting out of 4Lo and had the same symptons as you do. he shut the truck off not knowing what happened or what to do. after talking to me he started it back up and disengaged 4Lo properly and hasnt had any trouble with it since.

Yes I shift to N, and even shut the engine off, no change, I'm think something electrical, switch or something.

have you tried taking the motor off of the t-case and manually moving the selector shaft first to 4Hi then to 2Hi? its a job but itll save wear on your parts till you figure out the problem. take a look at the shift motor too.. theres a rebuild thread in the 'transmission, differentials, etc..' section
