98 v6 301k eng shut Ooff after sputtering HELP PLS

Just passed someone the stopped for lite wouldn't start sounded lijke it wanted to but just sputtered thought it was low gas got gas same problem ?
was thinking IAC any suggestions

Do you hear your fuel pump turning on when u put the key to RUN?

really don't think that is the prob it does sputter like it is trying to start
I'm having trouble finding simaliar threads when I typ in 98 explorer won't start can't imagine I'm the only one

I believe that was a seriouse timing chain issue

What motor SOHC v6, or OHV v6? OHV V6 has floating heads.

Ive never heard of what you describe as being timing chain in either motor. Do you have nasty timing chain rattle when trying to start the motor?
If there was no rattle, I would think your tensioners are good. If your tensioners are good, I really cant see a chain jumping.

Do you have a way to check fuel pressure? Its important to start by checking the easy stuff first. Fuel pump failures are common as our trucks age.

My 2001 fuel pump was working intermittently, sputter on high revs, until finally died... leaving me in need of a platform tow.
