'98 xlt
Hey Guys, I'm a new user to this site, and need some help on a '98 xlt I'm considering buying. It has the SOHC 4.0, auto tranny, CD changer, leather, 2WD, 38k mi. and clean! Couple of things: I want to know about problems with this year/setup, and what it's realistic towing capacities. I'm stepping down from a F250 turbo diesel and LOVE FORDS, that puppy has 250k mi and runs great, but my needs have changed. I do most of my own maintenance on it, and think it is a superior product. Input appreciated....

Im pretty sure that is the first year for the SOHC and i know some people have said their were issues with the motor for that year. Do a search for SOHC problems of something like that, something should come up! Other then that it sounds like a nice truck and i dont think you should have any other problems!

By the way, Welcome to the site, theres a wealth of information on here so happy searching, and dont hesitate to post more questions! !

1997 was the first year. The '97-'00 have had problems with the cam shaft tensioners, cam shaft chain guides and lower intake manifold o-rings. Ford revised these parts and extended the warranty on these items to 6 years/72K miles for the tensioners and o-rings, 7 years/100K miles for the guides. Fortunatly, the '98 you are looking at is low enough on the mileage, you will have plenty of time to see if they become a problem while still being under warranty. My '97 is on it's third set of tensioners and second set of o-rings. This last set of tensioners has kept my engine quiet for longer than it ever has before. The second set of o-rings weren't needed, but they were called for when Ford replaced my tensioners the last time (about 18 months ago). I have 83K miles on my engine and it still runs like new.

Thanks guys- This site has a wealth of info and the search function on this site really works great. I'm going to look into the car's history of having these items worked on, as well as the radio's display (another issue). The chip's and the aftermarket intake kits also seem to be a good idea, mileage and hp.

About towing capacities.....
What gears does it have? Maybe you will luck out and get one with 4.10's....it's rare on a 4x2 though. The limiting factor with that truck is the tranny. It's very light duty. If it doesn't already have one, consider getting a heavy duty tranny cooler.
