I have a severe rear clunk. It feels like it will break the wheel. I parked it and need to fix. I considerred rear drum brake came loose but brakes work fine. I lifted and removed wheel and can see no visable problem with rear drum. I considered u joints or slip joint but it is definitely only on the rear driver side wheel only and is major not minor clunk. I have 3.0 with a five speed. This noise occurs while coasting in neutral, excellerating, decellerating, or with clutch in. It will also occur going forward or backwards. This makes me think could be something loose in wheel, or worn gears in transfer case. I am considering dropping rear end and putting in salvaged rear end myself. Paying a shop to repair may be expensive and truck is 15 years old, 145000 original miles. To me it is not worth putting 1000.00 in to fixing, plus I may enjoy the challenge. My concern. I have anti lock brakes. I have bled regular brakes but have no experience with anti lock. Can I remove rear end with out having to bleed or disrupt anti-lock system? I have a chilton manual and it said I need some special tools. Is there a good work around to drop my rear end and replace or is the problem I am describing something different all together and my solution of putting in salvage the wrong direction? I did spin the wheel while in neutral and noticed that the wheel would turn some times a whole turn in either direction and the drive shaft would not move. seems like way too much play. I figure I can get most things figured out, but am a bit intimidated by the anti lock brakes. Any ideas to reason for the massie clunk, and my repair idea? abs fix?
