I just bought this truck yesterday and I asked the guy about the check engine light and he says that a mechanic told him that there is a sensor in the neck of the gas tank but the cap that is acting up or something. Anyone know what this is? I have heard that if you run your car without the cap on it it will bring up a code but I haven't ever heard of this. I would just run it up to the local parts store and get them to check it but it isn't tagged or insured and I don't live very close to one. Thanks for the help!

first of all, never trust anything a seller tells you regarding exisitng problems on a used vehicle. if you can't figure out what's wrong, take it to someone to have checked out. if it were something simple, the seller probably would have fixed it before trying to sell the vehicle.

many things can turn on the check engine light. it indicates an emissions related problem. start by going to an auto parts store and get the code scanned (it's free). this will narrow down the area to be looked at. there is no sensor in the fuel filler neck, but there is a sensor related to the fuel tank vapor purge system and one that monitors for loose of vacuum in the purge system. hopefully it's just the gas cap, but there's no way to know without further investigation. good luck, because it's your problem now.

Yeah but if the problem is something major its not really a big problem for me because I only have $500 in it and the scrap yard says theyll give me $850 for it so I am still doing well in the end
