Today my compressor went for a sh#t!! The clutch assy siezed up I guess got red hot and started melting the belt. I let it cool down and unplugged it took it for a drive and it did not get hot. Will I be ok driving it like this till I find another or do I have to hurry?
Thanks

I think it will be ok, I've read of ppl disconnecting their A/C compressor for other reasons with out problems. Make sure the belt is ok tho.

If disconnecting the clutch electrical lets it run ok, it will be fine to run it that way... your compressor is seized.... keep an eye on it for a while in case the clutch somehow got damaged but if it freewheels fine, it will be fine.

It does turn but it still makes a little noise. The good thing is that it don't get hot anymore. Thanks for the answers.

that "little noise" bears watching. I'd sound a cautionary note..... you may want to think about belt bypassing the comp/clutch until you can repair it (a seized compressor is BAD news and an expensive rebuild).

How would I go about bypassing the unit? Is there a belt just for this or is it something I need to measure? I can get a whole replacement compressor for $100 at the local yard. I just thought with X-mas just passing I would try to save a few $$$ til summer.

The belt is the one used in NON-AC equipped Explorers. Maybe someone who has replaced it can chime in here with more info. DO NOT go buy a junkyard compressor for $100 and put it in. You will be wasting $100. Your system is likely going to have contamination throughout. My 92 cost me nearly $500 in parts alone when I had the black death.... (compressor, accumulator, new return/muffler line and new condensor. PLUS I backflushed everything and should have installed an in line filter (may do that yet).

There ARE compressors that I'd be willing to buy used (YORK is one such compressor, Sanden is another) but NOT the FORD Compressors used in the Explorers.
