I took my X to the shop today to get oil change, inspection, and to look at my CEL that has been on for a couple months because im taking a road trip to Florida next week. My mechanic called me at the end of the day today and told me that they would finish up my stuff tomorrow and that the CEL came up as the A/C Compressor and he was looking into it. I did a search on here and found a little info on the A/C compressor but not exactly what i was looking for. It seems like the A/C compressor is made of different parts and is not one big unit. Is this correct???? What type of price range am i looking at if i need to replace it? The A/C has been working perfectly. Should i really get this fixed before my road trip?

I'm not sure that 96's had any AC codes... already suspicious. No the compresor is a single unit. About $250 in parts. But you don't simply swap out a compressor. If one failed you need to do more than just change it. I hate to tell ya but this one sounds fishy.

Difficult call from so far away but I'd say no thanks.

Happy Exploring

In fact, tell him that your cousin in CA is a Ford mechanic and was curious what code it threw. Ask him if he remembers the number. I bet THAT puts an end to this if it is a charade!

Chris

ps. I am not aware of any code for the AC compressor.

I agree, I have a 96 and I just replaced my compressor, but while my original was not working (2weeks?) I did'nt get any codes (and my compressor was completely shot).

I am going to go see him at noon today. My regular mechanic is on vacation, and this was his assisant, and my regular mechanic is a family friend, so i don't think he is trying to rip me off. Maybe the guy just read the code wrong or i misunderstood him?? I know he said something about checking the a/c Compressor switch. I'll keep you informed.
