Year, Model & Trim Level
91 XLT
Hello to all,

I have a quick question...I have a 91 XLT and my A/C is not working the greatest. I had the old syste, replaced with R135 and it doesn't seem to working all that great. Last summer I was told that I was told that I need a new compressor....I said, "NO WAY.....I just go this installed!!" The mechanic added freon because it was very low....everything ran find after that until now. Could it be possible I need a new compressor or could there be a leak that I could find with a dye test?? Second, if the compressor was bad.....would is still leak freon and work if some was added?? HELP!!!

- OK I think I can help a little. First thing to check is your freon level. Go to the local auto store and buy a tester (looks like a tire pressure gauge). THe AC system has sensors that keep it from running if it is too low. If it is low buy some dye and run it through and see if you can find where it is leeking.

- If it is full is the compressor engaging? You should be able to tel when you turn the AC on and you hear the clutch on the compressor wheel kick in, and kick out when you turn it off.

- Actually you can check either one of these first. If your level is OK and the compressor is not kicking on then yes it is probably bad, sometimes you can get the guys at the auto parts store to come out and double check your findings.

- If the fluid is low you can pull the sensor off the accumulator (sylindrical thningy) and use a paper clip as a "jumper" between the two contacts on the sensor at the end with the wires. have your AC on and see if the compressor kicks on and off as you make the contact?

Just a few random thoughts let me know how it goes and we can go from there.

Good Luck,
Dave

hi dave,

the compressor did click on when the mechanic placed freon in the AC system. so, i won't believe the compressor is bad. when the freon ran out...the compressor stop "clicking". i'm not a mechanic, but i have a feeling that it may not be that. like i said before......i have a feeling that there is a lleak in the system someplace. let me know if you ahve any other ideas...

well then that does sound like a leak.
do what he said and use dye to find the leak

try the dye
