I'm sure I'm not the first person to come up with this solution. I'm not an Explorer expert but thought I'd mention this if it hasn't occured to anybody.

The center A/C vents on my 96 would not stay up. I guess from wear.

The easy fix was to slide a 15mm ID O-ring over the round peg (or whatever you call it) on the outer sides that the vents attach to.

Just pry the vents out with a flathead screwdriver, slide the o-ring on and pop the vent back it with the vent aiming all the way up. It provides enough friction to keep them positioned. Takes less than a couple of minutes and costs less than a dollar.

Works great.

im low budget. i just put two penny's on the outside on each side. it solves the problem (doesn't necessarily look the best) but the good part is it only costs 4 cents to fix. could you post a pic though because i might want to upgrade to your idea so that it looks better.

pretty clever. i dont have rear vents but i would imagine that would work just as well with the front ones. my problem is the rollers for the vents up front wont stay open. they just keep rolling shut. doesnt matter much now that the ac went out but at least i can try and make the interior look better

Yeah the driver's side center vent did that on me. My step-son found one me at the junkyard he worked at that didn't have as much wear on it.

The O-ring probably would have fixed that one as well because it uses the same setup as the rears.

I think the reason the rears don't have those dials is because there are only two of them and if you don't want air, just cut the blower fan off.

Where I suppose on the fronts you could have air blowing out the side vents but not the centers if you wanted. I don't know why anybody would want to do that.

My Subaru has shut offs on the side vents but not the centers. you have to turn the fan.
