Is there a restrictor on the 1991 X's? Lately i've been runnin the X pretty hard to get used to where things are able to reach cause im plannin on replacing somethings, MAS, intake, headers, and full cat exhaust. Well anywayz, i was out runnin with some guys and ended up runnin a 1994 Dodge Neon, i beat him, but my X decided it wanted to keep cutting out in 4th gear, like fuel pump was cutting out, i was only at about 4200rpms. I know a lot of people will give me sh*t for trying to get a "fast" explorer causes they are SUV's, but i am building it for performance. So the questions i have are, is there a restrictor plate, and anybody know of a good clutch to use for 4x4 but still be able to handle some beatin? I'd appreciate it if there weren't any posts here about how it is stupid to use an explorer for performance, but rather posts on the questions i have. Thanks
Andrew

if you were pulling 4200 rpms in 4th gear then you were on the top speed limiter. a chip will cure this.

Hell yeah dude. I got a 94 (and its white and its an Eddie Bauer as the name suggests) and im into speed aswell (minus lowering or big rims). Its something about having the ability to make your truck kick the crap out of some little import with more stickers on it then horse power. Have U gotten an intake yet? (I'm asking because they are tricky to get for the 1st gen X's and I know where u can get a good one) or done the "ghetto twisty-tie" mod to your gas peddle? Mine is kinda quick, I beat a Cavilier a week ago (it was stockand those things done up are a joke, but none the less...). I fly out of a little airport near where I live and have measured out a quarter mile on the runway where me and my best friend took our cars one night. I ran a 16.2 quarter mile which seriously upset my friend, due to the fact his mostly stock integra ran a 16.3.

Okay, i've done nothing to my explorer, so any ideas people have let me know. I have not done intake, and the "twisty tie" thing, so let me know what those are all about. Well where i can get an intake system. Thanks
Andrew

For the intake: www.ifab.net
The twisty tie thing is simple and effective. Pull ur gas peddle in the opposite direction you would move it to accelerate. Hop on ur back and with a flashlight, look up under where the gas peddle pulls on the throttle cable. You pulling it outward will show that there is some slack in the cable. Wrap some twisty ties around that, which will eliminate it, allowing you to open the throttle more when it is pressed. Do a search for "cheap/free mods", some guy has pictures of how to do it if you need further explaination. If you plan on getting an exhaust, don't go duel. People have researched it and it shows a loss of backpressure or something on the cylinders, resulting in torque loss. About the chip, our generation, although more attractive, is very mechanical in relation to newer modles, thus shift points are not controlled by the computer. The speed limited can be disabled with a chip though.

Okay, im going to go out and do that twisty tie thing in a few minutes. And with a chip, does it matter i have a 5spd? I've heard thats better, but i dunno if it actaully has any affect

Your kidding me. Getting more speed by putting a "twisty tie" on your gas pedal. :D

What will people think of next!!??

some people may have a throttle linkage that is loose to the point that it will not fully open the butterfly. the twistie ties take up the slack and allow the linkage to fully open the valve, in effect allowing you to fully use what was there in the first place. doesnt give more power, just tightens things up allowing for better throttle response.

Leave some slack in it then : ) I dont know, you can email apten and ask them, thats what I did to find out it wouldnt really be worth the $$ for my car.

Oh wait i thought it said "throttle LEAKAGE" i was about to go loosen mine a little. Nevermind, my bad. Yeah, it makes it easier to jam mine in all the way when I want to make the engine go VROOM VROOM.
