Hi, im new to this board and also to Explorers.
i have always loved them and always wanted to own one, i just recently bought this 92 4 door 4x4 and it needs some work, i got it for only $1700 bucks,, got it on a great deal and also a warrenty, (am going to have the a4ld rebuilt as it is in need)
I own 3 Ford Bronco2's and have been wheeling for about 3 years,, and i have alot of trail time with my bronco's
as i stated i have always wanted an explorer as a "mostly onroad rig"
i took the x out this past weekend four wheeling with it for the first time,, right after a little work and slightly bigger and more agresive tires. as soon as we got to the trail a became impressed with it's ride offroad compared to my b2's,, when we (Me and my x,, and a couple freinds with a cherokee who are part of the group of us that go wheeling)
once we got to the "test site" this is an area about 3-4 acers wihich includes 2 mud holes and 4 differenty rated "hill climbs"
from mild to very diffecult.
on one side of this area you have 3 to chose from, from "easy anything 4x4 stock" to mild,, to very hard.
this hill "very difficult" has clamed alot of rigs,, let me exsplain it a little in detail.
it's a farly small climb, roughly 30 feet in lenght, and it is roughly 55-60 %
it is slick dirt and some rock cover mostly solid.
at the bottom you can olny back up for about 35 feet of run at it,, and 15 feet from the start of the climb is a 1 foot deep "speed bump" that goes horizontal at an angile.
which throws the rig if hit to fast,. then on 75% of the bottom is filled with a small mud hole just enough to get your right side tires full of mud, the only way to make this hill is the right amount of grip, the right line, and enough momentem.
if you go to fast your pitched sidways into the mudd after hitting the speed bump and thrown directly into the main 8 inch ruts going up the stepest part of the climb,, (this line can only be made with a fully locked rig front and rear)
to that date the only rig that made it in our group was a 94' jeep Cherokee.
after my buddy in his 87 made it on his 5th atempt at a good line, i decided to give it a go in the EX.
btw ii was not even going to atemp this run with this rig, due to lack of confedence in this rig. i was not even able to make this prevously with my modified 88 B2.
this run also has clamed a few chevys,, another guy that runs with us threw a rod bearing in his modified s-10 after hitting the speed bump to fast and being thrown into the side and lost all tracktoin and severly over reved the rig.
anyway, i gave it a run for laughs, going very slow and easy at first,, after the 1st atempt i was very curois about this "soccer mom's" ability to realy do well,, so i continied,, after the 6th atempt, i relized i needed more momentem, and said "why not" this would truly test the streinght of the rig,, so i hammered it,, once hitting the speed trap all four wheels were thrown from the ground ontop the obstical sideways,, but i kept on the throtle and the thing actuly cleared it! i was shocked!
anyway hope you enjoyed the story and love the ex!!

Congrats on the purchase and Welcome to the site. Sounds like you had a great time. You would be suprised at what a stock explorer can do. I have seen a stocker do a trail that was rated as 4+ trail. I was verry amazed when I saw that. So do you plan on making the explorer an offroad rig or are ya going to keep it for mainly onroad?

Man, that's some agressive off-roading : ). I also just took my X off-road for the first time and was surprised with it's performance. It held it's own, even with it being completely stock, even down to the tires. I wasn't doing anything too hard, but I did a bunch of stuff that was really fun.

It's good to hear that you enjoyed it, hope to see you on top of a mountain soon ; )

hmm this is what i have been thinking alot about, and also am looking for ideas from you guys on here on that, this rig going to be mostly a on road driver and alot of highway miles will be run with it, but however learning more about how well it does offroad makes me want to make it more cabable, on one obstical it failed in a few areas, one of which was the ground clerence when i was high centered on a hilltop that i can easly make with my modified B2, im thinking just a little lift,, and a locker in atleast the rear,, i dont have any exsperence with any locks, and am wondering how a lockright proforms? or any other locker that may be avalible to instail without removing the diff, and how do they work anyone have one? how is it on the road? as this rig will see alot of road.
im thinking i will probably go ahead and save a little more dough when the time comes and just go with an ARB air,,
now on to the lift,, i have already decied aganst any body lift,, as i need the clerence, but not a whole lot,, again( road use),, looking at the james duff 2.5 inch with the varible rate coils and exstended arms for more travel, anyone have this lift? how does it ride onroad compared to stock? how does it preform on the trail?, and will 31's fit with this with no rubbing at a full flex?
i currently have goodyear GS A 's 30-9.50's on it not,, which are great all around tires and great on the highway.
any ideas and thoughts would be great! thanx guys!
Isaac

I know that there are several members on here that run the James Duff kit and like it alot. I have not heard a bad thing about it yet. I believe you would be able to run 31's with no problem and if needed a verry small amount would need to be trimmed. Some people have been able to run 31's with no lift at all. I don't have any recomendations on lockers, trying to decide on what I want for the future. I hope this helps some.

Thanx alot for the info Joe! big help!
