I would bet that very few Explorers are ordered with a block heater, so this is more of an issue with our very northern friends.
I live in Buffalo, and it's not cold enough here to cause starting issues, even in the worst part of January. If there is an issue, syn oil takes care of it.

Edmonton, Alberta? -40 and under?
That's another question..

The recall involves 5,500 model year 2015 to 2016 Lincoln MKC and model year 2016 Ford Explorer SUVs that may contain block heaters that can overheat and possibly start a fire.

Ford said it’s aware of two reports of underhood fires in Canada, but is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.

Owners will be notified of the issue and dealers will replace the heaters with an updated design.

I can't recall the last time I used a block heater even in the coldest parts of Winter.

Hell, I don't even use a block heater on my F350 lol.

Block heaters are nice but will kill your pocket book if you leave them on much longer than a couple of hours. My diesel F250 has one and I use it several times a winter, it does help a lot in starting on a cold morning on a diesel.

About the best benefit that I can see on a gas engine is that the coolant will be at a higher temperature when you go to start it in the morning. Synthetic oil takes care of a lot of the engines problems with starting when cold.
