I have an 86 Ranger 4wd with A4LD going south. It leaks bad and slips in reverse and drive or OD when it shifts into third. Using shift position 2 I can drive it around town. I just acquired this truck and want to rebuild this tranny. I believe the leak is from the front seal since the case is mostly dry.

My experience: installing a shift kit in a GM automatic a long time ago.

I want some advice on getting started and what tools I will need. I will dedicate alot of time in the process to get a strong trans. Please help.

Thanks
Aaron

I'd start by reading the A4LD Rebuild Diary in the stickies section at the top. You are near enough to borrow whatever tools you might need from me.

Awesome Glacier,

So glad for the reply and your location. I will read up on the diary. I have to get the truck here from LAX (bought down there) and I think I will probably have to trailer it. I have some pictures of the underside that I took at a transmission shop in El Segundo. It looks fairly dry, but after shutdown and letting it sit for a short while it leave a good little pool of fluid. Maybe I will have them drop the pan and see if there is any metal.
I appreciate the forum and all you have to offer. Thanks

Will be talking to you with more questions. I like a challenge.
AA

You may want to do a frankentranny. Read that thread too.
