- 1994 Ford Ranger 4.0 A4LD
A couple of years ago I came across a good deal on an old 94 high mileage ranger truck (4.0V6 A4LD). Its been running great since then as a light duty hauler, no abuse no towing just something to throw some bags of dirt/mulch/lumber/etc in.
Suddenly this weekend, seemingly out of nowhere, I found that shifting from P/N to either R or any D gears took a good 5 seconds or more, with barely any drop in engine speeds.
The truck also felt very underpowered, to the point where you'd have to give it 1/2 throttle to get it moving (bad slippage??).
I dropped the pan, a huge mess of a job as always (seriously, would it kill them to add a drain plug), and the fluid looked and smelled fine, and found no obvious shavings or metal bits. While I was in there I went ahead and changed the filter, no effect.
Hooking up a pressure gauge shows very low pressure:
about 25psi idle in P/N
about 15psi idle in gear
revving to about 4000rpm brought the pressure up to 140 in P/N
a quick blip to about 2000 rpm in gear only reached about 60psi (didnt want to risk more damage).
Vacuum line on or off the modulator didn't seem to make any difference in pressure.
Mileage: 160k.
Any ideas what to try next?
