I did a search for this and didn't find anything. I just had the kickdown cable assembly replaced by the transmission shop on my '92 ex with A4LD tranny. Well, now there's too much tranny fluid in there (why they even touched it I don't know). Anyhow, I really don't want to have to take it back to them and wait 2 days for them to remove the excess, and I really don't want to drop the pan. It's about 3/8" over the "don't fill" mark; is there any way to remove the excess easily without dropping the pan? Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

Are you checking it in park, with the engine running?

I followed the manual's instructions. With the engine running, put on the parking brake, cycle through drive, neutral, rev, and park, then check it (on a flat surface). I did make the mistake of checking it with the car off *once*, but learned quickly.

Well then it sounds like you have an overfill... maybe 1/2 to 2/3 qt is my guess. The only way to easily get it out is by dropping the pan (sorry) unless you have a pump and a small tube. A slight overfill like yours is no big deal, but if they added fluid, they should fix it.

well its been more then 2 days however maybe future readers will find it useful.
--- empty container with lid {peanut butter mayonese jar}
+,--feet if 1/4" o.d. vacuum tube
+,--2-3 feet of 1/4 i.d. vacuum hose.
drill tow holes into lid no larger then 1/4 hose. the hose meeds to seal in lid so tighter is better.
extend one hose threw hole all the way to bottom jar. cut about half the hose off and insert it into the jar only allowing it to barley enter the jar.
Know the hose that goes all the way into jar take you tubing and slip it into this hose about an inch or two is fine. now with dip stick removed insert tube all the way into trans dipstick tube.
the other hose from jar is to be hooked up to manifold vacuum several to chose from so connect it and start the engine. within seconds you wil notice the jar slowly filling up with excess fluid.. remove desired amount and there you go. *reconnect all disconnected vacuum sources****

I was just going to post how the transmission shop did it. Pretty much the same way, only difference is, they didn't use the smaller tubing, they simply slid the larger hose OVER the transmission dipstick tube. Same thing really, just removes the need for the smaller hose.
On a funny note, one thing that happened after that was that my Max A/C was no longer switching to recycle-air mode, and stayed on outside air mode. Had the whole dash apart to check the a/c control panel, and all. Then after all that finally realized that they just didn't put that particular vacuum hose back on all the way. Grrrrr, why didn't I realize that BEFORE I did all that. :)

Could have used a 3/8 fuel line shoved it down the trans tube and started the engine, hooked the line directly up to the vaccum port on the intake. This would have cleaned the inside of the engine out and removed the unwanted trans fluid. You way sounds less smokey though.

That's an interesting idea, mechanix. hadn't ever thought of that.

One way I've used to get some excess fluid out of the tranny is to disconnect the line from the cooler and pump start the engine. The transmission pump will pump out fluid. The only catch here is that you don't want to walk off and leave it running until the trransmission pump runs out of fluid. Not good for the pump to run dry. I've also used this to pump some out before dropping the pan to try to make it a little less messy.

Just a tad :D
If I want smoke, I'll just use a can of Seafoam :)
