I'm replacing the transmission in an 88 Ranger. (floor shifter, linkage operated) The replacement came from a cable operated Explorer. The shift lever at the transmission is different, and points down instead of up.
It appeared that changing the lever would be simple until I discovered the retaining pin that holds it in the case. They don't leave you much pin to work with there, and even a gentle attempt with vicegrips did more harm than good.
I'm sure I'm not the first one to encounter this dilemma. Assuming that I can't get the pin out, which seems likely, what other options are there? It looks like the kickdown and shift levers can be rotated 180 degrees to the correct orientation for this truck, but that still leaves the problem of attaching the shift linkage to where a cable used to go.
I'm in a jam here and I really need to get this truck sorted out.
