I'm in the process of rebuilding a 94 Ranger A4LD. I have it stripped down to the bare case. My situation is my ATSG manual doesn't tell how to separate the reverse high clutch and the forward clutch. The two drums are grooved and don't look as though they will come apart. I don't see any obvious snap rings. So, how does it come apart?

I haven't got my manual in front of me but I think your manual is different than mine. Anyway, Page 60 shows removing it. Page 71 shows replacing it. Page 110 is a breakdown of parts. Your manual goes into the two units separately but doesn't tell how to separate them.
The reverse drum has a groove around it and the clutch hub w/the sun gear has lugs on the back side of those teeth that are down in that groove. I don't see how the two parts separate.

I think I have a snap drum and shell as refered to in the traqnsgo instructions.

I still don't know how to get it apart.

No, I didn't pry on it. I have no clue where I could try air pressure to blow it apart. Is there an air hole to apply pressure to take it apart? What is the normal way to take these apart? I can pry it apart if that is the way without damaging it.The steel looked so thick I didn't think it would snap apart.
I guess if it is called a snap drum and shell, it should snap apart.

I just pryed it off. I didn't think it would pry off with those big teeth in the groove but it did. The forward clutch plates are bad which is the reason I had no forward gears.
Thanks for your help BrooklynBay! Your the Pro!

This transmission has been rebuilt not long ago. Should I be concerned about the forward clutch being fried and everything else is good? Why did it fry? The frictions were just black and some of them were bare metal. The seal was beside the plate pack. I think it was the outer piston seal. Would this be the only problem?

Thanks for the tip. I will put a manual index sleeve in.

I have two more questions. Where did the huge rubber seal come from that I found stuffed beside the forward clutch pack? I thought it was from the piston, but not there. This seal is a big flat square edge and was about 4 inch diameter before it broke. Is this what they refer to as a cushion?
The Transgo kit came with a washer, orange spring and a green spring in a bag. Where does the washer go. I read in Glaciers post that it was for the TCC solenoid. His picture didn't show the washer.

I'm not set up to do pictures.

I found the washer on the Transgo sheet.

The only place I see that the o-ring can go is in the top of the hydraulic piston. I found the fried one in this clutch pack so it has to go in here somewhere. I have two large rectangular o-rings in the rebuild kit. They fit the groove but they fit slopy. One is a little larger than the other. The other one must fit the other clutch pack. I'll find out sooner or later.

The rebuild has been going pretty well. I was using some info from several different rebuild threads. My question is the needle bearing 7D014 is shown on both sides of the center support. Does it require this bearing on both sides of the center support? This was in Scorpio 95 rebuild.
In Glaciers rebuild diary, he didn't show if a meedle bearing went there. If anyone knows, please let me know.

Thanks,

Thanks Brooklynbay. I had looked at this picture before but it is such a busy picture it is hard to see what they are showing. I need another thrust washer.
I'll have to go to Transtar tomorrow and get the $40 kit.
Thanks again!
