My '91 just got a new transmission about 2 years ago, after the first one lasted about 160,000 miles... and recently I have been noticing some very high RPM's once in awhile around 45-50 MPH, reaching near 4000, and you can hear the engine obviously is in strain.

I am trying to take immediate action, I know the the transmission hasn't been serviced (or looked at) for awhile (was my mom's, she fails to make sure these things are taken care of), it also hasnt had a tune-up for awhile either (dont know if that would help the transmission at all ?).... so I figure it is only logical to start there, but is there anything else I can do to avoid the cost of ANOTHER transmission?

Change the fluid and filter quick. Make sure the fluid is at proper level at all times.

Check the modulator valve. Run a search for the procedure. Very common problem in those transmissions.
