Hello everyone,
I am taking out the POS A4LD and putting in a fire-breathing 302 and manual tranny swap:cool: I wanted to use a T-5 manual 5 speed. AA sells this adapter. BUT how is a T-5 gonna bolt to a transfer case when it has a Tailshaft housing? They come in the mustangs and a couple T-birds and those are obviously 2 wheel drive. So what gives?? I did find out that a T-5 came in come jeeps. This was for a 4x4 obvioulsy. Is this the T-5 they are talking about or am i missing something?
Next alternative is what would be a good strong manual 5 speed I could use as an alternative instead aof a T-5 that would bolt to the 302? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am starting this almost as we speak. I am going to look at the engine and brain combo that I am most likely going to use tomorrow. The last link is the Tranny. Thanks,
Tim.

The kit gets rid of the tailshaft.. It gets a new adapter and output shaft is different. When I'm home for spring break, I'll try to get a shot of my T-5 w/ the adapter to a dana 20

Thank-you very much. I would appreciate it tremendously. I would still like to go with my original idea of using a mustang T-5 and keeping my T-case. Thanks,
Tim.

Chief, as RFR said, the AA kit comes with a new 4x4 tailshaft, and the output shaft. It will require partial dissasmbly of the T5 to install.

There are many versions of the T5, all have different gear ratios and strengths, some even have different input shaft lengths. do your homework.

Besides the T5, there is the NV3500, and the M5OD that's used in the F150s and Bronco manuals. These trucks had 5.0s... If you could find that tranny setup in a junkyard it might have a t-case attached!

The T5s used a manual cable controlled clutch, you will need to adapt a hydrualic slave cyl. There are kits.

Thank-you very much for the great info. I have done my homework on the T-5 though and I do know about the gear ratios and other differences. One more question is On the T-5 when the adapter replaces the tail shaft housing, I am assuming the adapter also has a, or is outfitted for a gear shifter. All of the pics I have seen show the gear shifter to be on the tail housing. This makes sense to me now because I wondered why the AA adapter was so expensive, and now I realize that the adapter is fairly intricate. Does anyone know how strong it is? I dont want to trade one problem for another, and The damn adapter is very expensive.
Thanks again,
Tim

Cheif-- On that V-8 swap, there are 2 things for me that woulda made it easier... Buying the whole vehicle, or better yet, an f-150, and use the whole driveline... Might mean ya need new drive shafts, but ya know everything is going to fit correctly.

As for the T-5... There are kits for hydro throwout bearings, and you'll need a clutch setup from an explorer.

Also, the T-5 is almost completely disassembled... It took me and 01sport about 5-6hrs to do it. With very well layed out disassembly so everything went back on in the correct order. It was our first trans rebuild, and it went well.

Thanks for the replies. I believe I have all the info I need to start. The project is about to start. I am using a Engine, computer, and tranny combo from a 95 Mustang. I am buying that in two weeks when my tax refund hits my bank account:) I am going to go to the junk yard and pick up the whole clutch assembly from an explorer, and the other missing links, then viola! 302 Bad boy with 5 speed tranny!!!!
I cant wait. I 'll be sure to get lots of pictures and i'll try to document the swap very well.
Thanks for the info,
Tim

Few pics

Got a few pics... you can see the adapter on the back. It was tucked under our trailer, and i gotta leave for Fla...

Thanks for the pics.
Is the adapter just the short piece on the back or does it include the part in front of that with the shifter?

The adapter is the part behind the shifter, normally the tailshaft would be there on a 2wd

What kind of vehicle did you get the tranny from?

I found this pick on James duff website. It shows the adapter like you have on the left and the one I will need on the right. The one on the right has a shifter because the T-5 on a mustang loses the shifter when you take the tailshaft housing off to put the adapter on , so the adapter has a whole new shifter on it.
This clears things up alot. You must have got the tranny from a 4WD vehicle hunh. I know they came in jeeps at one point.

Yeah, my mistake... I do think where the shifter is, is also part of the adapter kit... Mine came from a 1990 5.0 stang

Does the T5 with the AA adapter change the location of the stick?

Also, are there any other T case's that will bolt up in place of the 1350? I would rather have a stronger one.

Chief34, have any updated pics?

Bryan

Yes the shifter location is moved forward quite a bit. Off the top of my head I would probably say about a foot.

If you are getting a different tcase then you should just get a stronger tranny and get a tranny and t-case combo that will all bolt up. Then you will just have to modify your driveshafts and make everything fit, and you wont have to buy an 800 dollar adapter to make it fit. The t-5 option is really only for keeping your stock t-case. There really is a few ways of doing it. Just be carefull because a way that might sound a little more difficult might be a lot cheaper.

On another note.... The BW 1354 is chain driven and is actually very strong. The T-5 is gonna be weaker than the 1354. I should find out how well it works soon enough since that is the option that I am using...
