Hello to the group and good day.

I have a 1996 Explorer with ControlTrak with 4.0 liter engine. It seems that I have very little accelerator free play- when going up a hill, I have to have the accelerator pedal hard against the floor to maintain any speed.

Is there any method of adjustment of the accelerator cable to give any more pedal travel? Just by visual inspection, there doesn't seem to be any obvious adjustment points.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the stock 95-01 section. Do you see slack on the accelerator cable in the engine compartment or under the pedal? It's possible that the cable might be stretched out.

BrooklynBay- good morning- many thanks for the reply. Trust all well with you.

Yes, in fact there is slack under the pedal and possibly in the engine compartment as well.

I presume this would mean replacing the cable...

Thanks for the posts...

I'll try the fix and report back.

Really appreciate the replies.

Hello again and good day.

I got a chance today to perform this fix and it works fine. The most difficult part was trying to get both my arms under the dash to hold the cable while I tightened the cable tie while holding the flashlight. Having the extra throttle allows the transmission to shift better as well.

Thanks again to the group.
