I have a 1997 Explorer 5.0 V8 and I'm in the process of replacing the spark plugs and wires. For 1997 there is a wire set for before 2/16/97 build date and a set for after. I checked my door plate and it says 2/97 (mine just had to be build in February). How can I find out the actual build "day"? I've looked everywhere. Help anyone?

The change is in the length of the spark plug wires and the angle of the boots. Its to accomodate the change from GT40 to GT40P heads, which also co-incided with the addition of an external EGR system.

If you have a small tube running from your pass side exhaust manifold to the back of your upper intake, you have external EGR and GT40P heads, and would order the post 2/97 wireset. No tube, and order the 96 style wires.

Please confirm (I'm not an engine expert).

I can see the EGR on the passenger side. Is this enough verification to indicate to use the post 2/97 wire set? Advise.

Make sure you have the EGR tube; the internal EGR set-up still has an external circular portion but lacks the tube. The tube gets quite hot. If you have this "hot tube" running from the EGR to the manifold, then it is the later manufacture. No tube=early manufacture (no P on the GT-40)
