Thump in gear selector when pressing brake

Is it normal to feel and hear a "thump" type int he gear selector when pressing the brake while the car is in park? Sorry if this is a dumb question... ask you can tell I'm not a car expert.

Yes, I believe it is. Mine does it. I think pressing on the brake when the vehicle is in 'Park' releases a locking mechanism so that you can take the transmission out of 'Park'. Otherwise it is locked in that position.

I hear the thump too. It's not a thump but a click like something is moving.

I never really noticed the sound - on my old Explorer..but its more noticeable in my 2016....it sounds like its some sort of a shift lock actuator - and obviously only makes a sound when pressing down on the brake to shift into D or any other gear..its not loud per say but it is noticeable..it sounds like its coming from the gear shift area more so under the center console arm rest area..is this normal ?

the test is to have the car on and then press on the brake..do you hear anything ? I think its normal but for some reason I didn't think it would be this pronounced. Just want to know if anyone else has noticed this ?

Its the brake-shift lock solenoid or whatever they call it. Guess I haven't noticed hearing mine but any solenoid will make some type of noise. I'll listen closer next time I jump in mine.

I can hear mine with the radio off.

I can hear it in my 14 Sport.

Thanks guys much appreciated...appears to be a non issue....just noticed that it was louder than the 2015 Edge that I had on loan..you can barely hear it on the Edge...

thanks guys.

Like someone said brake shift interlock solenoid and pin.

Something to keep in mind.

The day your battery dies - and you want to tow your car. GET OUT YOUR MANUAL.

The car won't get out of park because there is no power to move this interlock. SO there are usually 2 methods. 1) some times with jumpercables to the car you can move the car out of park.

however more useful is method 2) there is often panels or covers to remove and that allows you to lever the interlock out of the way- and take the car out of park and into neurtral.

just something to keep in mind. It's clearly spelled out in the manual.
