2013 Explorer XLT
It's been about 4 months now and I am still enjoying my 13 XLT. One of my co-workers saw mine and has since bought one (Sport I believe) and I told him about the forum, I believe he has used to to get his info from our friendy Ford reps. :)

As I mentioned in another post the SUV I used to drive had a sunroof and leather, which I gave up in this car. The one thing I wish my XLT had that Montero Sport had was the auto dimming mirror. I am hoping to be able to buy one and was wondering if anyone else had done so? Looking for price info, did you do it yourself of have the dealer/shop do it etc.

Any help/info would be greatly appreciated

Jim

I thought that was odd that you don't have one Jim. Looked at the Ford websites and found that seems to be the case for the XLT Explorers built for the U.S. All XLT Explorers built for the Canadian market have the auto dimming rearview mirror as standard equipment. :dunno:
Looks like we get a few more standard items up here. All Limiteds here come with HID as standard equipment as well.

I mentioned to the salesman that I like the auto dimming mirror on my Mont Sport, and he said he felt that Ford dropped the ball not making it standard on the XLT.

Peter, I assume you are referring to only the XLT having the dimming rearview mirror in Canada. My 2013 Limited has auto dimming side mirrors but does not have an auto dimming rearview mirror.

I found a Ford PDF stating the 2013 Limited does in fact have a auto dimming rear view mirror. Since mine has never worked since day one it looks like I have another issue that needs to be dealt with.

I wasn't aware that the auto dimming side mirrors were even available on the newer Explorer. Strange that your rearview hasn't been working at all. Unlike my previous Highlander, the Explorer has no way to turn the rearview on or off. It is always active.

...wish it had an auto dimming windshield :D...

all the OEM LEDs are fine but all the LED mods driving around are clearly way too bright and are blinding.

Hi Mikepaul,

Auto-dimming is done automatically; it cannot be "turned off." If it is not working properly, I encourage you to contact your dealer as a tech would be in the best position to check it out. However, there are certain situations where it will not dim, but the dealer would be able to confirm whether or not it is functioning properly.

Also, double-check that nothing hanging from the mirror or mounted near it could be blocking the light sensors.

If you have any questions, I'm here to assist. :)

Going to bump this back up in case it someone with info missed it and to ask another related question.

Does anybody know if the wiring harness is already there? Maybe one of our great Ford reps know or can find out? I can feel some wires up there but not sure if it's for the interior lights or the harness alredy there. The dealer said the only way for them to find out is to pull the headliner and I don't want to have to go through that unless necessary. The parts department said the mirror was about $180 I believe, and as it's a special order it can't be returned so I don't want my headliner pulled twice, once to find out if the harness is there and again to install if it takes a while for the mirror to arrive. I am looking for the basic auto-dimming mirror, not the one with the camera.

Thanks again

I would think that for just the auto dimming mirror all you would need is a power source. You might be able to tap into the power supplied to the map reading lamps. The sensor is on the back of the mirror toward the driver's side on mine.

That's what I am figuring as well Peter. Just don't want to buy the mirror and find out there is no way of doing it, or doing it easy. Hopefully I will find out the correct answer.

Thanks
