hey new here with my first explorer s.t. without cruise... I have seen the after market kits but wonder what would be easier, buying used parts or buying the kit? if used what parts would I need to grab? if new who should I go thru and what kit? thanx

not sure if the explorer is assembled the same (like ford putting the same wiring harness in all trucks ) as the escorts of that year. I know that in the escorts, you can go to the junkyard. Pick up a cruise solenoid/motor, the brake plunger and a cruise steering wheel and as long as your truck has the harness for the cruise motor/solenoid. Then you plug everything in, hook the motor onto the tb. And your good to go. However this is for the escorts. Not sure if this applies for the explorer.

I'm new to the ST's as well, but I added cruise to my 2000 S-10 about this time last year. I'm sure there are many differences, and perhaps someone who is more experienced can chime in, but from what I researched, it is usually much less expensive to obtain the used cruise parts out of a salvage yard and add them to your ST. Unless Ford ran the same wiring harness in all models, your looking at tapping into about 6-12 wires to hook up the module. A wiring diagram will tell you where to run everything. I did a write up on my S-10, and can email that to you for reference if you'd like. It of course won't be the exact same but you'll notice a lot of similarities. Most all cruise setups require identical wiring like brake switches, vehicle speed sensors, and such. Post ur email if you want my write up. It has pictures too.
