Hey guys..quick question for ya
I have a 92 xlt without the factory keyless entry (i dont think it was even available in 92)..I'm loking to add an aftermarket one..just to lock and unlock the doors. A lot of the aftermarket ones I have looked at either have an alarm with them (which i don't need) or have a third button for a trunk/hatch release, which the x doesnt need. I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions for something simple (read: cheap) to get the job done..

thanks

I have installed my alarm system on my '92, but I have everything except paging. You can get a simple remote entry kit on ebay, if they have the trunk unlock, thats ok, you dont have to use it for it to work with the doors. A alarm is always a little better, but its more work to hook it all up. If you need any help locating and identifing wires, let me know.

Just get the alarm. Why wouldn't you want that for a few extra dollars more?
I got a Viper 300ESP for $289 installed.

in all honesty, i don't want an alarm, i think they're more of an annoyance than anything..and the unused trunk/hatch release button would drive me nuts..isn't there just a very basic system available?

cant you pull the system from a 93 with the keyless

92's had keyless...at least mine does, and it still works. The truck is new to me, so I don't know much about the gremlins under the hood as far as electronics go, but the previous owner said Ford stock keyless/alarm systems in gen 1 Explorers were garbage, so he disabled it. Two things about the previous owner; he didn't disable it as far as I could tell, and I haven't had a problem with it since I've owned it. Lastly, I had a viper system on my Jeep Gr Cherokee a few months ago that WAS crap and I DID disable it because it would short out different components in my electrical system. IMHO, go with a dirt cheap remote keyless system that is a DIY install, if you've spent more than $55 you've spent too much. Now if you've got all the LCD/DVD crap in your ride that's different...get a good security system (I have a .357 and speed loaders...so far it's been the best theft deturrant I've seen).

Good luck!
