2002 Sport Trac
I just joined the forum. I need help locating the Airbag or Restrain Control Module for my 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. It was involved in a fender bender and both airbags deployed. They have been replaced, however, the airbag light on the dashboard is still on. I am told the control module needs to be replaced. Trying to locate module has been a challenge. The dealers are not very helpful. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

According to the Wiring Manual, it appears to be behind the dash panel, driver's side. Looks to be low, under the Central Junction Box (fuse panel). Looks like there are 2 identical modules - 14B321 is how they're numbered in the manual. Look for a ground wire. The modules will be close to where that attaches to the body. The modules are the only 2 things beyond where the ground wire branches out of the harness.

The diagram is an exploded view, and doesn't do a great job of showing the exact location.

I found it. It is actually by the center console, on the floor below the stereo. Thanks. I got it replaced and now I ran into another problem. The airbag light is now blinking and according to the code, it may be an impact sensor or battery or ground issue.

I was at the salvage yard today and saw the restraint module on an '02 Ranger is in the location you described.

Do your horn and cruise control work? The reason I ask is, I'm not positive, but I think the clock spring is no good after air bag deployment. The air bags in my '01 deployed before I got it, and neither the horn or cruise control work. In an unsuccessful attempt at getting the horn to work, I replaced the air bag without connecting it since it won't work until I replace/reset the restraint module and replace the passenger air bag. You need the air bag to properly depress the horn switch. My air bag light flashes a few times when I first start the truck, then stays on steady as it should with no air bags. As I've been researching adding cruise to my '02, I've come across threads that suggest the clock spring is potentially the problem with no horn or cruise. May not be related to air bag deployment, but both are controlled by the clock spring.

Here's another thought - in the steering wheel behind the air bag is a ribbon wire similar to what's used in computers. It connects to the cruise control, and horn. One of the wires coming out of the ribbon is a ground wire that connects to a screw beside the cruise control switches. The ribbon wire and ground wire were destroyed in my truck. I don't know if that happened when the air bag deployed, or if a previous owner did it later. You might disconnect the battery, pull the air bag and see if that ground wire is intact and hooked up.
