I am experiencing strange noises from my alternator that disappear when the engine is warm. I think that the sounds are related to the extreme cold that we have had lately (-6 windchill type). That got me thinking of the alternator, it has 86,000 miles on it. I was thinking of replacing it in the spring. Now to the question where do I get one rated at a higher amp, and what do I currently have for amp rating?

Thanks

Check out http://www.mralternator.com for higher rated alternators. I am purchasing a 200 amp from them. As for the rating on your current alternator, someone will correct me if I am wrong but I believe that it is 95 amps.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a funky sounding alternator when it's cold out. Mine makes some noise when I crank it up in the morning, but it goes away when the engine warms up. I was hoping the alternator bearings weren't worn out...still charges fine.

Same here mine seems to be charging fine. There just may be some dirt/grit in there. I dont believe there is anything to worry about until the spring when weather is better to make the swap.
