Well, I have been driving my truck in limited trips waiting for my RCD bracket to come in, but the d/side axle seal was leaking very bad. To the point I was putting in oil every couple days. So I went to Ford and bought a new seal and my new axle came in the mail. So, my buddy and I decided to do a swap, just to get that stuff squared away, so that when RCD installs the bracket everything is done.

Well, much to my suprise, when we pulled the axle out, the outer diff bearing fell apart and all the rollers dropped out. After pulling the bearing out, we discover 1/4 of the basket was blown out. Now I am really worried as to what the inside of the diff looks like (if anything made it in that far). So we duct taped up the hole and I drove home with no axle on the d-side. Hopefully that didn't damage the locker or the other axle and bearings.

So, until I get the RCD bracket in, I can't really drive the truck. I am going to go to Ford tommorrow and order the bearing. Does anyone know how much it would be to have someone press the bearing in to the housing while it is still on the truck? if not, what kind of tool would it take?

When I take the truck to RCD, I am going to take the cover off the diff when they remove it from the truck to examine to insides. I am praying that the pass side bearings aren't about to fail (I haven't had any problems with that side). Hopefully the R&P will be in good shape. If it isn't, I guess I can always leave the truck at RCD and bring the whole housing to a diff shop and have them do the R&P. If the R&P is messed up, I might as well do 4.56s now.

Anyone have any ideas or thoughts? Or advice? I am interested to hear anything at this point. I am kinda bummed out and really want to get this squared away ASAP so I can make the Az run.

Argh. I pulled of the wheel and the whole wheel bearing, seal, rotor collapsed. Apparently, the axle is required to hold everything together. So now I need a new wheel bearing assembly. One of these days I will have a truck again.

So anyone who blows a CV off-road....DO NOT DRIVE WITHOUT THE INNER AXLE SECURELY BOLED TO THE SPINDLE.

Ah, one of the reasons I don't have a front axle :D :p

AH CRAP. . .I thought you knew that. I learned that the hard way also. . .had a wheel actually fall of while driving, taking out my brake caliper bracket, hose, caliper and disc while it was at it. Luckily I felt it and was only doing a mile an hour when it did so, so I didn't tear up anything else.

I guess we all learn. :( I drove home the couple miles at regular speeds. It is amazing I didn't crash. The noises didn't start until a few blocks form my house, then my pedal went to the floor. Fortunately everything looks intact. The only visible damage is the wheel bearing and a gouge in the rotor surface (not too bad).

I went to Ford and ordered the flange (comes with the bearing and studs already together, bolts to the spindle with 3 bolts) with my old employee discount. it is going to cost $150, plus I have the diff bearing coming tommorrow. Good news is that I should be able to install everything in my driveway.

Any installation tips, Jeff? Anything I am overlooking?

Yup. . gotta love the brake pedal to the floor feeleing

The hub is easy. axle nut off, 3 bolts off, three on, axle nut back on, and re run the new ABS cable. $150 is pretty good. thats what fordpartsnetwork gives 'em to me for.

No idea about the bearing. I had the diff guy put in new ones when I went to 4.88's. I'm wondering how you managed to grenade the old one though. as for the seal. . they're a pain to get out, but pop right in with a few taps of a hammer. I imagine it just got a bite taken out of it one of the times you/we were prying out a half axle. I also throw a bunch of grease in the indentation of the half axle where that seal sits. It seems to do a good job of keeping it from leaking even though my half axles wander in and out 1/4".

Yeah brake pedal to the floor was pretty scary, not sure how I didn't hit the house. On further inspection tonight, the one rotor needs a light turning, everything else was good.

The hub part looks simple, but do I still need a new ABS cable? Mine wasn't damaged.

As far as the bearing and seal goes, I have the old seal out, no problem, and I need a special tool to press the bearing in straight. I think I can borrow one of those. What type of grease do you use on the axleshaft? Just multi-purpose?

And who did you use to get you gears done? Like I said, if the housing looks bad, I will regear to 4.56s now and just bring the housing to the shop, and after it is installed drive the truck in to have the rear done.

Thanks again. I hope alot of people are learning as much from my experiences as I am learning from yours.

The way I always get the hub, it has the ABS cable attached. Maybe you got it without the ABS sensor, cable.

Just nice synthetic grease. . kinda like the stuff I won at T-haven :)

As for Regearing:
Ramjet Rear-End Repair

$100 bucks plus parts to regear a housing, done in a day, excellent work. He's done both my brother Jeep and my truck.

Thanks again Jeff. The hub won't be in until tommorrow, so I am sure I will have the ABS cable on the part I get. Wish me luck! ;)

I'm glad I read this post before ever trying to drive around with that last part of the axle not attached.

Thanks guys for sharing.

Well I lost another axle today just on the street. it popped right out of the diff. I stopped by RCD and no bracket yet, so hopefully I will have it next week. Meanwhile my truck is at the diff shop having the front diff inspected. It looks like I will be getting a rebuild...

Sounds like Solid Axle Swap time.

That's what they always tell me when I talk about the difficulties of IFS.

You got to pay to play:

Dead Link Removed

I get that too. I tell those people thanks, but I'll stick with IFS. ;)
