Another 5r55s transmission tragedy - please help

Did you buy it new? I did. The trans first came out at 90.000 miles.

Yes, with ~18,000 miles. It's at 185,000 now. Reverse only works on level ground (the last ~10,000 miles) so I know it's almost time to rebuild it.

Beachcomber/Blackexplorer What symptoms did you / are you experiencing with your transmissions. What was the first sign something was going on. Thanks guys.

First trouble I had was the famous servo bore wear. The more stop and go driving you do the faster they seem to wear. A steel servo in an aluminum bore. A kit sleeves the servo bores. That was at 90,000 miles.
You'll have a dash warning light and loose overdrive. It will get worse from there.

The code is usually P0775. The bores can't be sleeved while the transmission is in place. It could only be done during a full rebuild. The other option is to use aftermarket servos with O ring seals. This could be installed while the transmission is still in the vehicle.

My transmission arrived in it’s black shipping container. I’m going to start tomorrow after work. I’m sure I’ll be asking tons of questions- thanks in advance everyone- much appreciated.

I'll try to keep an eye on the forum.
Make sure you flush the lines and the cooler if you have one.
I did it both ways.
An owner of a transmission shop told me of dealerships sending cars to him for repairs only because the tech did not flush the cooler and contaminated the new tranny.

Wife was trying to back out of a driveway going uphill and the wrench light came on. It's fine on flat ground. My tranny guy said there was no need to fix it until it stopped going forward. We just have to remember to park so we don't have to back the vehicle uphill.

Hi everyone , it took me 4 partial days and I day of help from my son but worn out 5r55s is sitting beside the reman tranny going back into my 08 explorer. Transmission, transfer case, starter- everything is out but I do have a question. I hope I didn’t make a major mistake but the torque converter is still on the motor shaft. Been trying to get the nuts loose thru the starte hole but can only fit a 3/8” drive ratchet. Anyone have any advice or a trick on how to get this out. It’s the only thing holding me up. Thank you

I am confused ....
The old tranny is out - correct ?
Did you pull it out with the TC still bolted to the flywheel ?
IIRC there are four 13mm nuts holding it together.
I used a 3/8 ratchet and deep 6 point 13 mm socket.
I was afraid of dropping the nuts inside the bellhousing.
Where is the TC now ?

Hi Pl- yes old tranny is out - torque converter is still bolted to flywheel. Mine has 4 -14mm nuts that I can cleanly get a 3/8” drive ratchet but man those things are on there and no way of fitting a cheater bar on the ratchet. Also when turning flywheel shaft to gain access to the next bolt - I turn clockwise looking at TC from rear of motor correct? Thanks

Somehow mine were not that tight and loosened up rather easily. Can you use 3/8 breaker bar ?
I was rotating the crank from the the front using the harmonic balancer and 19 mm socket turning clockwise so that sounds opposite to what you are doing.

I used Red LockT on my tc bolts. Now I’m regretting that decision as I’m currently removing those bolts... The tc will definitely have to be removed so the tc can be properly seated into the new Transmission.
PL - did the reman trans you purchased come with a new torque converter? I paid an additional $100 for a reman tc when I had mine installed locally. I think I paid another $100 for a heavy duty aftermarket trans cooler.

The new TC came with the tranny. Mine has a cooler already.

I was able to get the TC nuts off. Going to flush the atf cooler & lines & then start the install. With a new reman trans going in does it matter if the flywheel paint mark I put on it lines up with anything? I read it has to align with flex plate but that can only go on one way. Any advice? Thank you
