I was looking through my owners manual to my 1998 Explorer and to my surprise it said the recommended coolant was Ford extended life DEX-COOL engine coolant?

I was always under the impression that the green coolant was the one to use and few factory cars came with the Orange long life coolant? The owners manual could be wrong though as the spark plug numbers were incorrect as well. My owners manual is the third printing in December 1997.

Anyone shed some light on this?

Dex-cool has a lower PH level, but it also has a lower protection level. Protection level for normal green is around -40 degrees (when mixed around 50/50) and the PH is around 8-9. On Dex-Cool the PH is around 6.5 and the protection is around -20.

Dex-Cool is probably less corrossive. Dex-Cool is a GM antifreeze coolant. The Long-Life (goes in anything type) is it's own special mixture. I'll say this with a grain of salt - MOST Fords take green coolant!

Hmmmm, no wonder I coudn't get a reading on the ball tube when I tried to count the little balls. None were floating and I did use the proper mix.

Thanks drew
