Hi,

I’m planing on lifting my EX (not much 1.5 OME) I’m asking as i used to have a Cherokee and after lifting it, it developed a nasty vibration on the Highway.

So what are the disadvantages (highway mainly) to lifting an Explorer.

I did a search but couldn’t find anything so sorry if this has already been posted.

Thanks
Arran

As long as the components are good and everything is adjusted properly you shouldn't have any problems. This includes alignment and tire balance. I know my truck felt much better than stock with lift.

It is important to go with a wider track width when adding lift to keep the truck stable though.

Alec,

Thanks and yeah i agree with the track thing, i am actually going to put some 15x8 wheels on it as i have some 31's laying around from the past jeep. Would it be possible to put 15x10's or is that really pushing my luck?

Thanks again

Arran

I'd stay with 15x8's unless you have future plans of 33's. My truck feels lifted... if that makes sense. I can tell it cornering, but now it has a tendancy to just jump curbs and stuff that lies in my way ;)

Jeep's have bad driveline vibrations when you lift them 3"+ and do no buy a slip yoke eliminator for the tcase or a dual cardan drive shaft.

Hope this helps! Oh, and I love your country! My sister lives in Lugano and I was there this summer visiting her. The Alps are gorgeous!

Thanks Hokie, Would 31's look stupid on 15x10's. I had them on 15x8 before. I kinda like that larger lower look.

Yeah Switzerland is a nice place to live. I’m not actually form hear but i do enjoy living hear especially as the winter season just started last weekend.

My truck feels more stable now than before the lift. Adding the width of the new tires really makes the difference. I'm running 31x10.50.

after - lift findings

I lifted my truck a little while ago, using about 1.5" of TT lift and a set of Warrior extended shackles in back (part # war153 i think). BFG A/T's that fit on Stock rims.

In my opinion the truck now actually rides BETTER than it did before the lift (it feels like a magic carpet in the dirt, go everywhere =D), but this is just my findings on my truck. There is absolutely no change for the worse in ride quality on-road whatsoever for me, at any speed, and it goes over the bigger bumps and potholes better.

-edit

oh yeah, if you decide to lift your truck with shackles, don't use the cheapo shackles you can get at autozone etc...my buddy used them and his truck swayed in the back around corners :P

I love the way mine feels after the lift. I feel just so much bigger than everyone else. Unless you are going to go with at least a 12.50 tire width, I would just stick to the 15x8. I didn't go with the 15x10's until I put my 35's on.

Ok great thanks all for the help, i will go with 15x8.

I agree. After my lift, the truck handles much better. No sway or wobble during turns and bumps. No vibration on the highway, although, I have not gone over 65. Of course that's 65 on my speedometer, I don't really know the actual speed, probably 68 or 69. Overall nicer handling.

I got my speedo calibrated (was fighting a reckless driving ticket). When my speedo says 65 I'm actually doing 62. So the tires didn't throw it off too much.

Mine rides much nicer after i got my lift, too. I got 2 in the front and 2.25 in the rear and its beautiful. Its good on the highway, around town, delivering pizzas, whatever. Right now I'm running 30X9.5's on my stock 15 inch rims, but i have the Mod Bug and am planning on doind a BL this summer(ar after school gets out in april i should say, and i have time to go bother my old HS auto shop teacher and mooch the lift off him:D) and running 33's.
