this could be anyone in any suv. 4x4 does not mean invincible. BTW notice notice the vehicle and the the chain of events then realize that everyone including the baby in the child seat were OK. No quite sure how none of the windows were broken though.

Be careful in any make or model of SUV. For what its worth I have owned a Ford and now own a Jeep. I jsut wanted the other forums to see the clip.

Have fun but make it safe fun,

Fellow 4x4 SUV owner

Well first off you shouldn't be moving at such a speed in the snow like that. That is a given. The Explorer is an SUV, not a sports car.

If you flip it because you were going way to fast in snow like that, then well.. I don't know..

WOW

thats an amazing story that everyone lived unbelievable they didn't even really get hurt, that just goes to show you quickly things can get ugly, and how easily you can lose control.

I worked at Keystone for a ski season a few years back and I can't tell you how many 4x4 rented from the Denver ended up in the median upside down. A person who drives an SUV daily understands that 4x4 doesn't mean more traction than a sports car. I was posting this in the hopes that it gets spread around to those people who may not drive in conditions very often.

Regardless of make or model we are all wheelers. Happy trails.

It is a very sad scene but:
Too many people think they are in a Bradley Fighting Vehicle when they jump into a 4WD.
They should reaquiant themsleves with "center of gravity laws" and that snow and ice (or bad road conditions) can't be taken for granted in any vehicle.

Their "other car (may be) is a Porche" (license plate frame reference)......." but you ain't driv'in no Porche"

I try to keep it simple :
The marketeers call them "SUVs", I still call em trucks.
Its my own way to remind me to drive accordingly even if I do think I have an edge with that little 4WD button and can see over all of them.

"AH...do I counter steer in 4WD or not in 4WD? or it is in AWD?" Ever hear that one?

Your heart still has to out to those people in the NBC clip

My Question is why did they video tape it? Did they plan on this happening

I believe it was a San Diego news team checking out traffic in the inclement weather. Snow is not very common in these parts of Southern California, so it's news.

And then here comes this moron making their day by running right where they just happened to have the camera pointed.

Dang fool! LOL All I gotta say is that everyone here in Colorado has forgotten how to drive in snow here lately. There is this huge hill on my way to work and the last few weeks when it has snowed these morons STOP going up the damned hill! What the heck are tehy thinking? That they can just push on the gas and they will go? No even in 4wd its not realy possible all the time. I am one of those drivers who can't STAND people going 15mph when its snowing and when you finnally get around all of them the reason they are going so slow is cause none of them have any balls to go around the guy going to slow in the front and so they all follow really close and then end up causing accidents. You can go fast in snow you just better know how long it takes you to stop in a controlled skid. You better know what it takes to turn. There are all kinds of things you have to be twice as concerned about and have to be three times as alert as to whats going on 200 feet in front of you. Otherwise your ass is grass!

Peter
good thought but this one looked pretty believable.
(i think)
I saw it on TV..it did look very speeded up.
Also, there has never been a time when so many people are walking around with CAM corder too

I saw a neat documentary not to far back where news reporters, reputable magazines etc do quite a job to doctoring pictures and film to put a more dramatic spin on the items they report.
This seems like it has been a good year to blast 4WD, so the news just keeps the ball rolling. That is why:
"I get all the news I need on the wether report"

"Be careful out there" - HSB

In a perfect world there would be separate roads just for "Us" and "Them". That used to be Off-road and on-road. Now enough onions are off-roading too. On-road I have several times done a few tricks to prevent someone else from hitting me and screwing us both. How about if someone else was coming along in the way of the rolling SUV? Bad for them. Although, I have made a few errors in my driving life too. The whole thing just goes back to people leaving their brains at home when they get in their cars. I think it ought to be more challenging to get a license. How many people that you come across on the road would fail if thay gave this test: "Simulate a vehicle coming at you as you cross an intersection- Only way to pass is to floor it and get out of the way". Half the people I follow home would fail that one- Problem? Don't think. Just Brake. Duh. Thses are the folks complaining about SUV's. Enough soapbox. If its not a scam, I'm glad they lived.

Don't quite get what you mean by this. I wasn't suggesting it was staged. I double checked. It was filmed by a San Diego TV news crew and they just happened to be there at the 'right' time.

I don't know if it was speeded up, but don't forget, he comes into the shot at a right angle, unexpectedly. It'll take the camera man a split second to react and follow him to keep him in the shot. Normally, when you film or photograph a moving vehicle from the side, you follow it with the camera before you press the shutter (or trigger). This guy was surprised at what suddenly showed up in his viewfinder and reacted pretty good. There he was, panning stopped traffic. Then something pops into his frame at a high rate of speed. He kept him in the frame and caught him when he got into trouble.

There where way to many other vehicles around for this to be staged.

I cant agree with any more with the fact to drive within your limits. Its sad that idiots drive like that with their kids in the car.

I'm almost positive its totally legit. Peter's right about everything he said, and I dont think it was sped up because of the speed of the blowing snow and the speed of the man getting out of his pickup truck.

Not at all the vehicle's fault though, its the stupid driver. Its like I always say about people like that "God willing he'll never wreck, but if he does I hope he hits a tree or something and doesn't hurt any innocent people".

I think I may have lost some perspective on the forces at work in the accident. Better said : It WAS almost surreal how that thing keep tumbling....and tumbling.

AMAZING!

Even given the severity of the crash, it certainly says something about the crashworthiness of an SUV! THAT is exactly why I drive one.

i am suprised that got caught on tape. I am glad I drive a stong, capable vehicle. People just need to remember that 4WD doesn't make your tires melt thru ice.

i feel much safer in an suv than i ever have in a car. while we are on the subject of dumb drivers i see it all the time here in houston, first off dont get me wrong im not bashing women because there are just as many stupid male drivers too, there are so many women who will drive like 90 through a school zone while talking on there cellphone and driving a suburban trying to make it in time to pick there kids up, it just really pisses me off because they swerve around you and are just totally oblivious to what is going on around them, and to the fact that they are driving a SUV not a sports car. its all about knowing your limits, your vehicles limits, and the limits of your environment, not "is little johnny gonna make it to t-ball practice on time?". sorry to ramble on but sometimes you just got to vent.
