Don't have my camera handy, but the spot has been there for years and steadily growing worse. It's right below the glass, slightly right of center. The rust actually goes back to under the lift glass gasket. It's ugly and the rust runs down the lift gate. Had an estimate to repaint the whole lift gate for $400. Seems like a lot to throw at one spot. I might just hack at it myself. Don't want it to rust through.

sounds like a lot of labor for patching the hole and having it come back... might be better to find a new or used liftgate have that painted and swap over all the parts... I have an 07 and the only rust I find on mine is on the top rocker drivers side under the plastic molding when you open the door

Yeah, 400 bucks is a lot to throw at a rust spot on a 10 yo truck. Will be getting out the $10 rotary tool instead :-)

I've had a spot show up twice now coming from under the chrome trim piece on the liftgate with the Ford emblem. I had it repaired the first time four years ago but it is back. I think there is a design issue between this trim piece attachment and the body panel. Going to get it fixed again in a couple weeks for the last time. Four yrs from now if it comes back, I'll let it rot thru as the rest of the Ex will probably be showing rust in other areas by then.
Actually, it is leaving a rust stain now on my driveway from somewhere underneath, I'll be looking at that tomorrow.
Joys of owning a 10yr old vehicle in the north...

Definitely poor design in that area. Not only does water get into the wiper shaft, the rust below the glass, and in the license plate area I had 2 orange rust streaks coming down. Upon inspection it appears Ford used steel bolts instead of SS ones. I replaced them and 90% of that problem was solved.

SO... had a look under the Ex the other day to see where the rust stains on my driveway are coming from. To my delight.... both rockers are rotting out. Looks like it has been doing it for quite some time. Can't see it unless you are right under the SUV since the running boards block it all. Can't justify spending the money to fix it so I guess I'll just have to live with it.

Mine has rust spots on the hood. Driver side corner next to the windshield and in the front by the chrome trim piece. I live with it. Hopefully next year trade this in for a Tacoma. Lol!
