I found a 1997 FJ80 Landcruiser front axle for sale. Includes factory electric locker and hy-pinion differential. It is 100% complete and includes stock radius arms. It had only 7000 miles on it when it was pulled from the vehicle.

I am getting the wms to wms from the owner, but they can't be too far off from an Ex. So it will have coils and radius arms which is what I want. Plus these axles are pretty strong. Its seems like a great "idea", but I want to see if its been done?

I am pretty sure you'd be the first. What gears are in it and what size tires are you wanting to run??

With an Atlas 2 it wouldn't matter which side the pumkins on. Is there any clearance issues with the ds being on the passenger side?

Your going to have clearance issues with any SAS, swapping in a p-side drop axle isn't really worth it. If you have money to burn go with a more common axle like a pre 77 HP D44 and have it cut down. IMHO an fj80 axle is expensive, there are less aftermarket parts available for it, and anything you do break on it will be more $$$ to replace. Not to mention it's probably setup for a 4 link of some kind so more than likely your going to have to cut off all those brackets.

Toy axles are so much better than a D44.

Considering they are as strong if not stronger than a Ford 9".

here are some benefits it has over the HP d44.

High pinion
Tie rod behind axle
63" WMS-WMS
Cheap axle upgrades allow use of 38.5's or bigger
Cheap axle to build off of
Axle shafts are larger
better ground clearance under the diff
kingpin bearing design is much stronger than the Ball joint design of a d44
better bigger brakes
the drive flanges are stronger than the warn hubs
the u-joints are way better than a 1320 u-joint

The diff can easily be swapped to the driver side.just cut the tubes and swap sides, But since you are going to most like want to rotate the knuckles if you want much lift with your SAS it shouldnt be too much of an extra expense.

The only other downside is that you will have 5* less turning radius than the U-joint style axles since the toyota birfields limit the turning radius.

Thanks guys,

Nissanboy, If I do use the axle I will probably be swapping the pumkin like you said. I have been searching on Pirate about this axle and I may just sell it. This axel has 7k on it w/ 4.10s and factory electric locker. It has the radius arms and all steering still on it for $500. I was looking and was told I could easily get $1200 for it.

it is HP....

so is a HP44................so it can't be used as a benefit that a fj80 axle has over a D44.

edit: and a few other items on that list are debatable, and can't be seen as definates

I think if you look around the aftermarket for fj80s and thier components is pretty much non existant... the older toyota axles have much more available to them.

I am fairly sure that the Toy axles as long as they are the same axle. (the 4bangers used a different axle from the v6's) All their parts are interchangeable and you can get about anythign you need for them. The toy aftermarket is exploding with cool and new parts and they are comprable if not cheaper than Dana axles. Allpro only uses FJ80 axles for their Tocama SAS kits. They also sell a kit that gives you the best of both worlds.

A FJ80 axle with D44 outers adapted to the kingpin design of the toyota in order to give you U-joint turning radius with the added durability of a Birfield.
