If the dash switch only has auto, 4x4 and low, is there anyway to turn off the automatic function?
I'm considering purchasing a 97-98 explorer with the 4.0 ohc motor, and 4x4 would be fun, but would like to be able to turn it off for the occasional fun.

thanks so much...I looked for a search function and didn't see one. I haven't been around here in a long time since I sold my sport a while back, I hope everyone can handle a few newbie questions here and there.

We'd be bored if newbies didnt ask questions! :D

I'm a moderator over on SHOforum.com, and we try to encourage first timers to search for the simple ones. I guess it's pretty rare a new question comes up.
BTW, since I'm typing, any thing important to look for while shopping for a 97-99 Explorer besides the obvious stuff with maintaince?
I'm hoping for a 4x4 4 door, auto or 5 speed manual with a limited slip rear axle (D4 axle code if I remember right for the 3.73's) for around 8-10K bucks, more options the better.

Just make sure it has a V8 ;)

I saw a thread a few days ago where a couple of people were complaining about problems with 98 Exp. My 97 has been very reliable so far....

I wasn't trying to bash you for asking that question. It was a good question. I just thought it was funny because they really went over this topic recently.....

Martin.. did your 93 SHO get totaled with you in it?!

It's in with the list of little boxes above the forum lists and above the thread lists... 3rd or fourth button from the right.

no offence taken, I'm just glad to be back over here, and looking forward to getting into a SUV again.

I'd love to have the 5.0, but unfortunatly my insurance company hates under 25 year old males and anything with 8 cylinders, insurance would be insanely expensive. And besides, the 5 speed manual isn't available...

Yeah, unfortunatly... I was driving about 55 MPH on a farm to market road here in Houston (FM1960 for those familiar) and a drunk driver pulled out infront of me in a S-10 pickup. The roads were very wet, and my abs had gone out about 2 weeks earlier, not that it would have made a difference since there was no time to react and go around him.

Anyhow, the drunk driver went to jail, and as it turns out he was uninsured. So lucky me my insurance gets to foot the bill, but I'm barely gonna get enough to pay off the SHO. All things considered, the Taurus did a great job of protecting me, considering I hit him doing about 50-60 mph. I have a sore wrist and thumb from the airbag going off, and had a cut knuckle from when I cracked the radio display.
I'm gonna miss it, but I'll move on, hopefully to a certain 99 Explorer 4x4
ya'll tell me what you think
