are stated power gains true for aftermarket parts?

I have been looking at aftermarket parts for my '91 XLT, and have noticed that all the parts state a large gain in power. For example, with a MAS, throttle body, Flowmaster Force II, JBA headers, and a Carsound catalytic converter, all from Truckperformance.com, it is stated that i should have around a 75 hp gain with all of these parts and a gain of 100 ft. bs. of torque. Are these numbers accurate?

I have the Jet chip, 66mm TB and 72mm MAS..I have not upgraded the exhast yet..There was a difference with the 3 mods combined..Milage went from 15 to 20-22, acceleration increased, engine ran cooler, and I can now run 87 octane with no PING. COST...around $700, worth it, not sure...Now that I have the 35's, I'm glad I did it, if I had stayed stock..not sure.
 






Most of the mods will give performance gains. Are they exactly what the manufacturer claims? Doubtful.

Remember they can claim anything they want; there is no regulatory body to make them prove gains.

Its a buyer beware market.

An advantage of the web site is that you can get data and opinions from actual users of the gizmo in question.
 






IMO if they are true it is probably only 50%. TWENTY HP GAIN = 10 hp. and then by the time it gets to the rear wheels its about 2 or 3 hp. You can only feel 10 or less hp in your mind. Or 2 tenths (a car length or so) of a second in the 1/4 mi.

i agree with this statement. there are a number of factors to make these numbers that the aftermarket companies give you 'questionable.' one thing that many people overlook is at what rpm you see the increase (if at all.)
 






Most of the time they companies will list the highest possible gains that they got when they ran test. THe down side is that you don't know what other mods. were done on there test vehical. plus I'm sure they have the vehical hooked up to a computer during test so they probably change timming, the ammount of fuel the engine is getting ,etc. to get the max gains.
 






Also depends on the car. I have seen dyno results of some big V8 cars/trucks, that do gain major 20+HP gains from thinks like air filters, exhaust & computer changes. This all combined, with the difference from the stock baseline. Notice these perofmance parts are tested on these types of cars. Never on a V6 X, or a V6 tarus, or a 4 banger ranger. Notice also that these claims are in "up too gains" 0 is included. As from my experince it does matter what car it is. All the mods on my X didn't make it any faster. It does drive better, less hesiatation, smoouther rpm's breaths easier. But since I have such bad gearing in my X 3.27's My X is not faster then another X that has the same mods, but has 3.73, or 4.10 gears. If I change the gearing, It will be.
