Hi everybody.

I want to replace my stock head unit (AM/FM, cassete, round volume knob) on my '92 with a Kenwood CD receiver that gives 40WX4 (max power). Will my stock speakers work fine with the CD receiver or will I damage something?
I'm fine with the sound quality of the stock head unit, but want to play CDs and some more power.
Any advice or comment will be welcome.

i put a sony head cdx-860 and pioneer seperates in the front and and left the stock jbls in the rear they work great and i have a 40-watt amp going to them

Yes, they will work fine. However, they will never sound as good as aftermarket speakers. They are jbl or delco speakers and use paper or plastic cones (crap) and foam surrounds (crappy crap). I would highly suggest at least a decent pair of speakers for the front if not all four. Pioneer make great speakers without charging too much. I have 6815's x 4 in my custom system and they sound great! I picked them up for 60 bucks a pair.

Good luck,
Rob
P.S. If you are not adding a sub, then you should most definately replace the speakers!
