- 98 Mountaineer 5.0 AWD
Hi Everybody,
I'm new hear and have a question: I have a 98 Mountaineer 5.0 AWD 120K miles that is currently in the shop getting the trans. rebuilt. The mechanic was replacing the transfer case seal and when he removed it there was a fleck of metal on the backside of the seal. He then drained it and said the fluid was black. He wants to tear it apart and see what's wrong, but my problem is this: There were no symptoms (grinding chattering) before I took it in and I hate spending big $$ to fix something that's not broke. I figure put it back together and deal with it when it breaks. Does this sound reasonable?
Thanks.
