Devil's Den Feb 22

Well it looks like a couple of people want to meet this Saturday (Feb 8) for a run at Devil's Den in San Antonio. Since I am not familiar with the San Antonio area I'm not sure where we should meet. Someone who is more familiar should determine a good meeting place. I was thinking of starting around 10 AM. That will give anyone from out of town time to get here. What do you all think?

Dammit, can't go :(

A local 4x4 group is meeting at 10am at the Whataburger at Ingram Park Mall which is about 2 blocks from the entrance to the Devils Den.

The mall is located at the intersection of loop 410 and Ingram. At the northwest corner of that intersection is the mall. The Whataburger is at the south end of the parking lot.

It will be relatively cold, but its not supposed to rain on Saturday.

Those that are going - what mods do you have on your vehicle?

Also I can serve as a guide as I'm familar with the area.

I might be able to come. Am I buff enough?

2wd with 4.30 gears, very good LS in the rear. 33x12.50s, and enough hp and torque to kinda make up for no low range. I do get stuck in loose, dry sand, but can pretty much keep up in all other terrain.

You will be fine. If some people from here want to go I will bring my Explorer (normally I wheel my '85 Runner). My Explorer is a stock '95 4wd with the exception of some 31" BFG's . Most of the trails can be navigated by a 2wd with good tires. You might have to take some bypasses on the main trail and stay off the optional obstacles. One of the good things about the Den is its fun for most trucks no matter what the build.

Cool. I'll try to come. I'll let y'all know if I can make it.

Can you give me the street address of the Whataburger so I can find it on Mapquest?

Johnny, looking forward to seeing you again.

I'm driving a 1989 Bronco II Eddie Bauer, 5 speed, 3.73 gears with LS rear. I am basically a stock vehicle but I have proved myself at Moab. Can't wait!

Anyone know if TwoTone is going to make it?

Johnny, you shouldn't have any problems out there, I've seen the way you handle your BII and you can out drive most of us on this site.

Thanks Alec. I hope that you can make it. I haven't really been offroading since Moab so I'm really itching to go. Should be a lot of fun. :D

Well I still don't know if I can come.

Is this gonna be a one day thing or are y'all gonna camp out overnight?

I don't think it would be safe to camp out there. The Den is basically a creek bed running through a not so nice part of town.

You can see most of the Den in a full day.

FWIW - the weather forcast is 42 and a 20 % chance of drizzle.

:( I so want to get BamBam back out. *sigh* I just can't do it right now. I can barely keep gas in the car to get to work. Sucks being poor.

I haven't been on a trail since CCR 2001. sob sob sob.

Poor BamBam is sitting in this humid hell, getting all rusty. Needs ball joints. Needs tires. Aww, heck.

Well, guys. Have fun out there for me.

I hope that the threat of a little moisture isn't going to keep anyone from coming. I am planning to meet at the place mentioned above where the other off roading group is meeting at 10 am. If nobody else shows I will try to get in with them. Hopefully some Xs from the board will be there and we can do our own thing. If you show up just look for the blue and tan BII with the broken front grill and www.explorer4x4.com sticker on the front windshield. I will keep checking back here to see if anyone else is planning to show up. See you there.:D

I'm probably not :(

I have a problem at work and have to go in for a couple of hours early tomorrow morning. I will be out at the Den around 12 instead of 10 and see if I can catch up with anyone (Explorer group or otherwise).

FYI - The group who is meeting at 10-10:30 AM is some members of the TX4WD.ORG San Antonio chapter.

Hey Zukster
I went out to the Whataburger around 10 and nobody showed, I guess the weather turned them off. I did drive over to the dens to see what it looks like. There is quite a bit of standing water. Since I am just a stocker I decided to wait until another date to try the Dens. I am thinking of trying again in two weeks. That will be my last Saturday here in Texas so I really want to try and get to the Dens. If you still want to try today call my cell phone and we can set something up (I will PM you the number). Otherwise I hope that you will be able to make it in two weeks.

It seems everyone at the last minute decided to go Sunday instead of Saturday because of the nasty weather today.

They are meeting tomorrow (Sunday) at 10:30 at the Whataburger. If anyone wants to go, let me know. I'd like to go tomorrow.

Climbnkd2 - There is alot more to the Den than you can see from the road.

I am going to plan on tackling the Den on Saturday Feb 22 if anyone is still interested (can someone change the date on the thread subject line?). Hope that some more people will make it. Same time and place to meet (10 am at Whataburger, Ingram Mall). Hope to see you there.

Any chance of running the Den on Sunday instead of Saturday? Most of the locals come out to play on Sunday.
