i dont know for sure, but id say if it only happens when your car is in overdrive, it probably is your tranny.

Is it similar to a manual tranny if your in too high a gear at too low a speed? Your tranny may just need an adjustment. I think the older ones have modulators that could be adjusted, before the tranny went fully electronic.

So if it is dead...

So say I do need to get it rebuilt...about how long will that take? just trying to figure it all out now. gonna take it to a tranny shop on thurs and see what they think...will let ya know how that goes

mine took about 4-5 days if I remember correctly.. maybe 4.. and it cost $1300

try driving with the selector in D only...try not using overdrive..if it drives fine that way, then if it was me i'd just keep driving it before I fork out a bunch of money
My ford factory replacement tranny was $2,500 at 91,000 miles

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be just the U-joints on the drive shaft......

yeah, I was kind of thinking it might have something to do with the driveshaft too.. I know that a lot of my buddies that own firebirds and stuff complain of crazy shaking if the driveshaft isnt balanced.. etc etc

Driveshaft

How could I tell if it is the drive shaft? Or is that something best left to a shop?

You can get a real good idea if it is bad of not by getting under the truck and seeing if the drive shaft has any up and down slack at all. If you can get it up on a lift it will be much easier. On each end of the drive shaft is a U-joint....that is where you are looking for ANY play at all. Just grab it with both hands and see if you can get any movement at all from either end.

I had to replace the U-joints for a very similar problem and it was a fairly easy fix. MY tranny however died without much warning at 125K miles. Who knows? Also paid Ford about $2500. Good luck!

Leaning towards Drive Shaft

I was just reading in my Haynes manual about the driveshaft and it says...... "If the noise or vibration occurs at the same engine speed regardless of which gear the transmission is in, the driveshaft is not at fault". Well, thankfully my vibration doesnt occur in any other gear, only in OD or the equivalent gear when its in drive...4th? around 1600-2000rpm's. I tried out the test the manual said to do for the u-joints and they appear to be fine...so im assuming its an unbalanced driveshaft causing this shaking. so, if thats the case any idea how much that would cost to get fixed? thanx

I finally got my hands on a Ford factory service cd-rom manual with the Elec/Vac section also. It gives a lot of info and test for the trans. and drive line.............

While I agree w/TPLYNCH about a simple modulator adjustment. I was reading an article in 4x4 the other day about 'percieved' tranny problems and root cause. I would check out/replace the Throttle postion sensor, It may have a dead spot at that RPM range...
