automatic 4x4

my automatic 4x4 has quit working and i have no idea what to do. i was curious if it has anything to do with the wiring or if it might be something else. i also want any tips available that could possibly get it working again. i have a 91 explorer and the 4x4 switch is above the radio where there would be an AC vent if it werent there.
